Electrical System Studies Engineer

We are currently recruiting for a Senior Electrical System Studies Engineer to work with us to help strengthen our electrical team. The role will be primarily desk based, but site visits will occasionally be necessary for meetings and to undertake survey work. Candidates should have an understanding of power system analysis and familiarity with an analysis package such as ETAP, SKM, DigSilent, IPSA, EMTP or PSS/E and have a good understanding of carrying out a wide range of studies such as loadflow, VAR compensation, short circuit calculations, motor starting, protection coordination and harmonics. Knowledge of more complex studies such as system stability and electromagnetic transients is desirable but not essential.

Candidates should be degree qualified, and either a Chartered Engineer, or close to achieving this qualification. All candidates should be eligible to work in the UK without requiring a visa. The role will be full time and based in our Dorchester office.

This role is general in nature and will cover a wide range of studies and design activities, and engineers will be encouraged to broaden their skills. SPE is a young and expanding electrical consultancy so there will be many opportunities to grow with the company.

 

Essential Characteristics

Experience of UK electrical engineering markets, such as renewable power, utility services, building services & industrial plants

  • Degree Qualified.
  • Working towards chartered engineer status.
  • 4+ years’ experience in electrical engineering.
  • Experience of most study types.
  • Good familiarity with one or more of the following power system analysis software packages such as ETAP, DigSilent, SKM, PSS/E, IPSA, etc.

 

Desirable Characteristics

The following characteristics are desirable, but not essential for the candidate:

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng).
  • Experience in power system stability or electromagnetic transients
  • Familiarity with DigSILENT.
  • Familiarity with EMTP-ATP, EMTP-RV or PSCAD

Senior Consultant (P/t)

We are currently recruiting for a Senior Consultant, who specialises in protection and control, to help strengthen our electrical team. The role is part time in nature for around 1 day per week and can be carried out locally or remotely and would typically suit someone who is semi-retired or has other commitments. Candidates should have a good understanding of protection requirements for the UK Distribution industry from 11kV through to 132kV, which should have been gained either through working for a DNO, consultant or ICP. Candidates should have familiarity with carrying out CT/VT sizing calculations, IDMT coordination, development of protection and control schematics and wiring diagrams and IDMT and differential schemes for transformers, cables, busbars, reactors, etc. Candidates should be a degree qualified, Chartered Engineer and eligible to work in the UK.

 

Essential Characteristics

Experience of UK electrical engineering markets, such as renewable power, utility services, building services & industrial plants

  • Degree Qualified.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng).
  • 10+ years’ experience in electrical engineering.
  • Experience of CT and VT sizing calculations
  • Experience of carrying out IDMT coordination studies
  • Experience of differential protection settings and configuration
  • Experience of protection scheme development
  • Experience of 11kV, 33kV and 132kV protection schemes

 

Desirable Characteristics

The following characteristics are desirable, but not essential for the candidate:

  • Based Locally (Dorset, Somerset, Hampshire, Wiltshire)
  • Knowledge of Digsilent, PSS/E, ETAP, SKM or similar
  • Experience of NGTS standards and configurations
  • Knowledge of communication protocols such as DNP3, IEC 61850, etc
