Consultant - System Studies Engineer

We are currently recruiting for a Consultant Electrical Engineer to work with us to help strengthen our electrical team. The role will be primarily desk based, with the need for occasional site visits. Candidates should have a minimum of a BSc / BEng in Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline. Candidates are expected to have achieved chartered engineer status (CEng) and should be eligible to work in the UK, without requiring a visa.

The ideal candidate should have around 10 years’ experience gained within a consultancy, EPC, ICP, DNO or similar environment. Candidates should have extensive experience of power system studies and simulation using DIgSILENT Powerfactory for typical UK grid connection / G99 type studies. Knowledge of simulation packages such as PSCAD, EMTP-ATP, EMTP-RV or CDEGS would be an advantage.

We are willing to be flexible on location for the right candidate and anticipate the role being a mixture of home and office based, and may even consider setting up a satellite office. Please contact us to discuss further.

This role is general in nature and will cover a wide range of studies and design activities, and engineers will be encouraged to broaden their skills. SPE is a young and expanding electrical consultancy so there will be many opportunities to grow with the company.

 

Essential Characteristics

The following characteristics are essential for all applicants:

  • BSc, BEng or equivalent.
  • 5+ years’ experience in power system studies and simulation
  • Detailed understanding of power system studies such as load flow, short circuit, arc flash, motor starting, harmonics, grid connection studies, voltage disturbance and protection studies.
  • Detailed knowledge of DIgSILENT PowerFactory.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng).

 

Desirable Characteristics

The following characteristics are desirable, but not essential for all applicants:

  • MSc or MEng.
  • 10+ years’ experience in power system studies and simulation.
  • Knowledge of scripting and automation.
  • Knowledge of DIgSILENT control system DSL functions and application (or equivalent)
  • Knowledge of electromagnetic transients, and software packages such as EMTP-RV, PSCAD or EMTP-ATP.

Earthing Design Engineer

We are currently recruiting for an Earthing Design Engineer to work with us to help strengthen our electrical team. The role will be primarily desk based, with the need for site visits. Candidates should have a degree in Electrical Engineering, or a related field, and have a good understanding of electrical engineering theory.

The ideal candidate should have 1-2 years’ experience gained within a consultancy, ICP, renewable developer, M&E Contractor or similar environment. However, engineers with less direct experience or graduates will also be considered.

Candidates should be interested in expanding their technical knowledge in the field of earthing design and power system studies and achieving chartered engineer status (CEng). Candidates should be eligible to work in the UK, without requiring a visa.

This role is general in nature and will cover a wide range of studies and design activities, and engineers will be encouraged to broaden their skills into general power system studies. SPE is a young and expanding electrical consultancy so there will be many opportunities to grow with the company.

 

Essential Characteristics

The following characteristics are essential for all applicants:

  • BSc, BEng or equivalent
  • Knowledge of power systems and HV electrical networks
  • Familiar with power system studies analysis software such as ETAP, ERACS, DIgSILENT, etc.
  • Willingness to travel for site surveys

Desirable Characteristics

The following characteristics are desirable, but not essential for all applicants:

  • MSc or MEng
  • Experience of earthing analysis software packages such as CDEGS or XGSLab and carrying out simple studies.
  • Experience of carrying out soil resistivity surveys using the Wenner method.
  • Experience of preparing earthing layouts and schematics with AutoCAD (or similar).
  • Working knowledge of fault current return paths and split factors calculations.
  • Experience of carrying out earthing surveys.
  • Understanding of different LV earthing approaches and implications.
