Its a been a busy January and February with lots of new jobs starting; but one we would particularly like to showcase is our involvement on the new RWE Cowes Power Station black starting project.
The existing Cowes power station, is being redeveloped to help provide black start capability in the event of a UK wide blackout. The new development include addition of a new Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to provide synthetic inertia to support the existing GTGs during load block step loading, to contain the frequency and RoCoF to within acceptable limits. In addition a 20MVAr shunt reactor is being provided to help provide reactive power compensation, for energising the sub-sea cables to the mainland.
SPE’s scope includes carrying out a feasibility study for the whole project, including detailed modelling of the system within DIgSILENT Powerfactory to look at the loadflow, fault levels, harmonics and dynamic response of the synthetic inertia during the block loading steps; as well as providing design services for the new HV/LV design and associated equipment specifications.
