The Water industry within the UK, is an often overlooked, yet critical industry within the UK, and as well as facing continual upgrades and expansion for an ever increasing population, it is also facing pressure to reduce energy consumption and achieve net zero carbon emissions. Many existing sites face similar problems of aging assets and infrastructure, complex brownfield tie-ins to upgrade existing facilities and a forward drive to add in new renewable power and battery storage to existing facilities.
SPE Electrical can offer a wide range of studies and services across the water industry covering conceptual design ideas, system analysis and detailed design activities. Typical services we offer can include:
- Protection coordination studies
- Arc flash studies
- Fault level studies
- Site surveys and reviews
- Preparation and Completion of ENA G99 forms
- Concept design for adding in CHP and embedded Solar PV and Wind generation
- HV network design and reinforcement planning
- Advice on Demand Side Reduction (DSR)
- Advice on using battery storage systems for power arbitrage (peak shifting)
- Addition of new Electric Vehicle charging stations
- Concept development
- Reliability & Availability studies
- Hazardous Area Classification and assessment
- Protection scheme design & CT sizing
- Interface design to existing assets
- HV cable sizing calculations
- HV network design and reinforcement planning
- Loadflow, fault level, motor starting, protection, stability and arc flash studies
- Earthing Design and Analysis using either CDEGS or XGSLab
Members of this team, working together, have successfully worked on several notable projects, which are summarised below:
- Costain – Wyelands WTW: HV design and calculations, and power system studies (Loadflow, Fault Level, Motor Starting and Protection Coordination) to support replacement of an existing main 3.3 kV and LV switchboard, requiring a complex tie-in the to the existing legacy 33kV protection scheme.
- Southern Water – Various Sites: An ongoing project to carry out site surveys, and subsequently develop a detail SLD and working simulation model, of a number of sites across South East England.
- Costain – Strensham: HV design and calculations, and power system studies (Loadflow, Fault Level, Motor Starting and Protection Coordination) to support replacement of an existing main 3.3 kV and LV switchboard.
- Ennoviga – Various Sites: Ongoing technical support to provide technical support, to enable deployment of Solar PV and Battery energy storage to a number of water sites throughout the UK.
- Enisca – Barcombe: Protection Coordination study to consider operation of a recently upgraded 11kV and LV site, and the need for directional protection and inter-tripping.
